Student FAQs

What is The Unicorn Labs’ high-school research mentorship program?

The Unicorn Labs is India’s first research platform for high-school students, pairing you 1:1 with PhD/industry mentors to complete a 12-week, structured project that culminates in a university-level paper, a 20-minute presentation, and a submission package (journal/competition/poster).

How does the 12-week research program work (week-by-week overview)?
  • Weeks 1–2: Topic, literature review, precise question
  • Weeks 2–4: Method design, data plan, pilot, ethics
  • Weeks 4–6: Data collection, analysis, iteration
  • Weeks 6–10: Writing, figures, citations
  • Weeks 10–12: Revisions, talk, submission package
    Weekly 1:1 check-ins keep you on track (~3–5 hrs/week).
Who are the mentors and how are they selected?

Mentors are PhD researchers and industry experts from top universities and companies. We shortlist mentors based on your topic, timeline, and goals, then confirm fit via a consult. Mentors are chosen for subject depth, coaching ability, and ethics.

Do I need prior research experience to join?

No. We start from first principles. If you’re curious, consistent, and ready for 3–5 hrs/week, we’ll teach the sequence from question → method → results → paper.

What topics can high-school students research with The Unicorn Labs?

STEM, humanities, and interdisciplinary projects including AI/ML, biology/health, behavioral economics, climate/policy, literature/media studies, and more. If you can frame a feasible, answerable, significant question, we’ll scope it.

What deliverables will I finish with?

At minimum:

12–20 page paper (your work—no ghostwriting)

10-minute conference-ready talk (slides + notes)

Submission package (journal/competition/poster)
Optional: poster, portfolio page, data/code appendix (where appropriate).

How much time does this take each week? Will it affect my grades?

Plan 3–5 hours/week with scoped micro-milestones. The cadence is designed to protect schoolwork; during exam weeks we adjust scope without losing momentum.

How does mentor matching work at The Unicorn Labs?
  • Book a 15-minute mentor-match consult
  • Receive a curated shortlist aligned to your niche
  • Confirm fit and scope
  • Kick off with a written 12-week roadmap and weekly checkpoints
Is the program online or in-person? Do you accept students outside India?

The Unicorn Labs is online-first (live mentor sessions + async reviews). We welcome students globally; time zones are scheduled case-by-case.

How does this help with college admissions (without guarantees)?

You graduate with tangible proof of depth—a paper, a talk, and a submission—plus a credible mentor recommendation. We don’t promise admissions outcomes; we help you earn a strong, evidence-backed story.

Can high-school students publish research papers?

Publication is not guaranteed. We support quality submissions to appropriate venues; acceptance depends on fit, rigor, and peer review. The norm is submission; publication is a possible outcome.

Does The Unicorn Labs ghostwrite or use AI to write papers?

No. The Unicorn Labs is strictly student-authored. Mentors provide structural, methodological, and clarity feedback. Any tool use follows academic integrity; your authorship is non-negotiable.

What’s the difference between the Research Program and the Entrepreneurship Launchpad?

Research Program: Build scholarly outputs (paper, talk, submission), master study design, analysis, academic writing.

Entrepreneurship Launchpad: Use 10 practical AI/marketing/tools (e.g., Stable Diffusion, ComfyUI, Veo3, Framer, Figma, Notion, Loveable, Jitter, Superbase, N8N) to launch a service business with a site, offer, deck, and first client tests in ~6 months.

What tools and platforms will I use?

Depending on project: Google Docs/Drive, Overleaf/Zotero, spreadsheets, Python/R (optional), Notion/Lab logs. Entrepreneurship track adds design/video/automation tools and a simple site + payments stack.

Fees, scholarships, and how to apply?

Program fees vary by scope and track; need- and merit-based aid is available along with scholorships upto $2000 USD
Next steps: Book a 15-minute mentor-match consult → receive a mentor shortlist → confirm scope → kickoff with a 12-week plan.
